Looking for an affordable cultural walkable town (Manchester, Nashua: apartment, rent)

We are a couple living in the Greater Boston area and we would like to move out to have a (way) more affordable rent ($900 tops but preferably in the 800s for a 1-bedroom apartment) and a more relaxed way of life. My husband works in Waltham,MA (just off 95) and we're looking for a town within a 1 hour or so commute from his job. We're looking for suggestions for a town with a nice downtown, cultural stuff, restaurants, yoga and gym available within a walkable distance, either in Massachusetts, New Hampshire or Rhode Island. Can you think of any place that fit this description? We absolutely love Portsmouth, NH but unfortunately can't afford it but we're looking for a place with the same vibe (relaxed, diverse, vibrant). Also, we are in our late 20's-early 30's and would like a place to meet people like us.
Thank you. We read so much mixed review about Nashua that we're not particularly excited about it. But we should check it out if you think it fits the description.
That doesn't sound like our kind of town. A little too dangerous. But thank you for the information on Nashua.

Nashua is a relatively safe city compared to just about any city with the same amount of people anywhere in the US. It's considered safer than 32% of the rest of the cities in the country. Of course, all of NH is pretty safe when compared to the rest of the country. 5 years ago, it was rated #27 as the safest city in the country by Morgan Quitno Press.

It is this part of your requirement that makes Nashua the better choice in New Hampshire, if you exclude Portsmouth.

Yes we'll have to visit and form our own opinion for sure. The thing is that even if everyone has an opinion, through this forum you can feel what towns are mostly loved and which ones are arising mixed feelings. But of course, we'll check and have our own observations to make the choice.
