Getting to Kittery from Portsmouth is going to be horrid for til next sumer, the bridge connecting the two aformentioned cities was closed due to rusted support coloums, lovely.
There are 3 bridges in Kittery to Portsmouth, all within 90 seconds of each other, only one closed. I dont see it affecting traffic at all. The bridge has shut down many times in the past.
big deal - it closed a year early. Can't wait for the new bridge that will be built! It's expected completion is 06/14.
When Maine passed on all maintenance for the old bridge, it was only a matter of time for the closure. NH can't be expected to do all the work when the bridge is shared by two states.
That depends on who's state the river belongs too. The old deeds call the northern bank the end of Maine. The old boundery is not river center. The ship on the NH state flag is on that northern bank too.
New Hampshire agreed in 1977 that the border runs along the middle of the river as per deeds granted by the King 1740. New Hampshire may not now claim that the border runs along the Maine riverbank.

Is that just for that particular river? I notice that the signs on the border with Vermont still imply that the West Bank of the Connecticut River is the NH border.
I wonder how much money was saved by not properly maintaining the structure? It had to be a lot but probably less than the replacement. A penny saved is a pound spent.
