I would have to say Boulder City unless you like it really hot in the summer. Laughlin gets very hot in the summer but it's a very nice and quiet area. The same goes for Bullhead City in AZ. The sister city to Laughlin. I've lived in Laughlin but not Boulder City.

I grew up in Boulder City.

I would NEVER raise a kid there.

I prefer Boulder City over Laughlin and its proximity to Vegas gives it an edge.

Off the Vegas Strip

Funny that I just saw this thread now. My girlfriend and I are planning to move from Michigan to Nevada eventually. We like to go to the strip and shows at night, but I don't think that's the area we'd like to live in. I'm not concerned about the job market, since I will continue my current job of software development, in which I work remotely We're looking in the following:

1) Safe and friendly people for the most part, low crime, etc
2) Relatively low population density
3) Within 45 minutes of Las Vegas
4) A lower cost of living, more house for the money, would be nice but it's not an absolute requirement.

We're continuing to research the areas on our own, but I'd be interested to hear from Nevada residents which area you think might fit us best. Summerlin, Henderson, Boulder City, Laughlin...or somewhere else maybe?

Thanks in advance.

Interesting. Why do you say that? (I know little about the area) What were the pros and cons of the area for you?

Boulder City is the most midwestern, Michigan-type place you might find in SE NV...at least the old part. The newer areas look more southwestern suburban. The old downtown area reminded me a lot of a quaint Michigan, Ohio, or Ontario town. I even saw grass downtown. Boulder City isn't cheap, though. If I won the lottery it would be on my short list of places to move.

Since you mentioned Laughlin which is about an hour and 45 min from Las Vegas, I would say that most of the other criteria you listed matches up pretty good with Pahrump which is about an hour from Las Vegas. You're definitely getting the relatively low population density (which won't be found in most parts of Henderson/Summerlin, if not all parts) and the lower cost of living, more house for the money too (sales tax there is 7.1% compared to 8.1% here). The people I've met there so far have been real friendly. Can't say much for the saftey because I haven't actually lived there yet, but from what I've heard from long time residents, as long as you're not looking for trouble, it is likely that you won't get into any.

...and I'd have to recommend that you take a look at Henderson.

Boulder City. NO GAMBLING. Laughlin, new gambling town. And you want to know which is better to raise your kid in? IMO Boulder City wins hands down. As far as jobs, Boulder City is close enough to Las Vegas you can find a ton of jobs vs Laughlin where they are few and far between.

The only down side is with the new bridge, the traffic going through Boulder is going to drop so you will lose a lot of the drive through business. Then again, a reduction of traffic going through town may be a plus.
