A Bostonian moving to Elko may as well be moving to another planet

LMAO! ABOUT YOUR LAST QUOTE! I was rolling. So true! It would be moving to God's country great!!

Ok, I am from cold, upstate NY near Buffalo, and let me tell you, Las Vegas will be a rude awakening for you!!

I know you are sick of the cold, blustery winters,etc..BUT really think about it. Go spend a week or two in Vegas, look around at real estate and check out the towns befor you move! I moved there for 2 years and I was always getting sick there! I think it was mainly the pollution,etc...the desert, dont forget you are moving to a desert!! You may like the thought of WARM weather but you may really want to think this one out! It is very warm there, and warm air breeds GERMS all the time! I was sick with strep throat, ear infections (high altitude maybe?)....I lived near Summerlin after living in Vegas and hating it...I moved up near Red Rock Canyon..which was better. Too much smog directly in Vegas..

You will go from work, home, to visiting friends, back to work,etc...You cannot stay out in the sun there!!and you will go from air conditioned places to 120 degree heat and it wears on you!! Believe me!!

I went through 3 car batteries,2 alternators, and needed a paint job on my car due to the heat destroying your car.

Pay isn't great to start, but NO STATE SALES TAX THERE! Which is great so add 2.00 an hr. to what you make an hr...

There are LOTS OF CASINOS but there are other job settings other than Casinos!!!that is a bit stereotypical! LOL>>>>>>>

Just research before you run and live there!!!!!!!!! do you really want to live in 110 degree heat and then in the winter, your blood thins out, and it drops to 70 degreees and you want to throw a blanket over yourself!LOL>

Lots of transients there who are down on their luck too, but there is a lot of money out there!

Summerlin, NW Vegas, SW vegas are good areas...Not directly in Vegas though!! Good luck. Let me know if you decide!or have any questions!

What are you talking about? We do have a state sales tax! its like 7.75% sales tax in Vegas (that is accurate, right Vegas people?)

You obviously meant that we don't have a state income tax and that is true we don't but it would hardly be a difference of $2 an hour depending on how many dependents you claim and deductions you have!

Everything seems to cost more out here anyway so any money you saved in not having a state income tax will just go to the landlord and the grocery store!

Also how does heat make your alternator go out? I;m no certified mechanic but I've worked on my own cars and I know that under the hood gets hot period! It could be 5 below or 120 if you run your engine long enough it will get hot!! That's why your car has a radiator and an engine fan -- to help cool it down! I don't know exactly how hot it gets but its hot enough to burn you pretty bad if you touch metal parts-- I'm sure that's hotter than 110 degrees, so it was probably something else killing your alternator. You said you had to replace the battery too, did you know that a dead battery can kill your alternator? The vice versa is true too, running a dead alternator can give your battery a dead cell!

And big deal-- alternators go out from time to time, they don't cost much down at O'reileys, Kragen, Autozone, Advanced, Napa, etc. It is a due-it your-self job! It's like 2 bolts and a wire depending on what kinda car you got!

I don't know how the heat could ruin your paint job either, but I know that the salt that is used to melt snow in the midwest and upstate New York can cause sever rust problems. I seen cars in the Midwest just 6 years old and have bad rust problems, but where it doesn't snow and aint right on the ocean, cars don't rust out like that!

I don't think your logic about it being hot means theres more germs holds any water either! just because its cold outside doesnt mean anything! Its still a toasty 75 inside and that is where germs breed! And to be frank with you, the severe cold weather can do more harm than germs sometimes... When I lived in Omaha, the cold winter air would sometimes make me throw up on my way to work in the mornings... that was no fun!

Geesh Rebel! Ouch! You don't have to get gruff! I am just telling my OWN experience which was not a good one in Vegas.

Batteries that are only 3 months old should not burn out! especially 2 times in a year? I have a Mercedes that is 10 years old with an ORIGINAL battery!!

The heat definitely faded the paint on my car away too!! I never had a problem with fading paint especially when my car was only 1 year old!! I blame it on desert for all the problems I had with the car! 110 degree heat fries your car out! Even the locals said the heat is hard on a car's shelf life! so to speak!!

I would never personally live there again ever..but made some nice friends through work!!

OH SORRY! State income tax not sales tax!! My error!

Actually cold weather is much worse on a battery than hot. If you get short life out of the battery it is more likely your cars electrical system than the heat. 110 is not particularly hot to a battery. It is much more stressed when deeply discharged which happens repeatedly in cold climates.

Fading of paint on a car in less than 5 years is almost certainly a manufacturing defect. You should talk to the car builder.

Hot certainly accelerates certain wear out modes. Gets to upholstery a bit. Other than that it is probably much nicer than cold and salt. It is common for people to buy western cars and take them back east as the eastern cars have pretty much had it after five or six years.
