I currently live in an apartment in Hermitage and am looking into buying a house. In searching for a house, I want to pick one that is zoned for a good school district. Ideally, I'd like to live closer to downtown. Thoughts?

Williamson County has some of the top ranked schools in the state. If you moved to Brentwood or Franklin, you would be about a 20-30 min. drive to downtown depending on traffic.

If you don't want to move to Williamson County or go private (my kids are in Catholic schools), I would look at Percy Priest, Eakin and Julia Green (for elementary). Eakin may be your best bet as you could live in the Hillsboro Village area and still be close to downtown.

What about for the top (*non-magnet) choices for high school? We are also looking at Williamson Cty. schools, but we would like a little more diversity (both racial and socio-economic) and closer to Vanderbilt. We have missed the cutoff for application for the magnet programs, but that might be an option in a year or so... Do the Percy Priest, Eakin and Julia Green areas feed into good high schools?

They feed into different middle schools, but they all eventually end up at Hillsboro.
It's right in the middle of Green Hills. Lots of racial diversity, lots of ELL (English Language Learners, which is what they call ESL students now.) They offer AP and IB classes. It's been around since the 1940s, I think. They participate in all the major high school sports.
Here are all the high school clusters, with lists and maps by high school. You can scroll down to see the different schools.

Don't let the area fool you, nor the offering of AP and IB classes, Hillsboro is still a Metro School and shares the same problems that come along with Metro High Schools. Keep in mind that the Hillsboro zone consist of lots more than just the Green Hills area and its open enrollment meaning anyone can go there.

You already live in Hermitage. Check out Mt Juliet. Wilson Co schools are some of the best around. Almost as good as Williamson, for a fraction of the price. It's not closer to downtown, but not much farther either.
