I have only been through Hartsville (several years ago) and I didn't really like it then but maybe things have changed. I don't even remember what I didn't like about it I just remember telling my husband that I didn't like it.
When (or if) you come to Cross Plains stop in at Thomas Drug store and have a bite to eat at the old fashion soda fountain. There is an organic dairy farm and organic vegetable farm less than 10 miles away. I just found out about these farms in the last few weeks and haven't been to visit them yet. You can find more info for the dairy fram at Tennessee Real Milk.

Check out Burns, TN. Population is around 1500 and it's only 35 min. from downtown Nashville and 10 min. from Dickson. Low crime and good schools. You can get a lot of home for the $ on a large lot. Beautiful wooded area.

Watertown's a place I hear a lot about. They have a historic town square with an unusually good mix of businesses for a town that size (roughly 1500), an annual Jazz Festival, etc. Couldn't tell you what it's like to live there, though.

Small enough? Heck, we know just about everybody in three towns in a row ... even though the towns are spaced apart

I'll tell you one to stay out of! Lebanon, it's great if you just passing through or spending money. But is NOT a place to buy a home and live, unless you like being treated like dirt. Less than 30,000 "people".
Want more info read my previous posts on the town, ha,ha.
Now there are good towns around Nashville, but we were only visiting them so I couldn't tell you about them.
