I'm a young guy who loves the city life and am contemplating moving into the actual city of nashville. But I want to move to a place where I can I enjoy and be close to all the local rock venues, coffee shops, and clothing stores but without sacrificing my personal safety and well being... I understand its unavoidable in any moderately sized city but I'd also like to find my best possible options...

can I have my cake and eat it too?

Either East Nashville or Hillsboro Village/Vandy/Belmont area in West Nashville sounds like it would be a good fit for you.
I see East Nashville as a more hipster area and the Hillsboro Village neighborhood a bit more preppy. So it really depends on you and your personality.

The West side will be safer and closer to downtown, but the East side will be cheaper. EN also has it's share of gang activity. If I were not price shopping, I would definitely go for the West side.

I definitely mold better into the "hipster" area than preppy for sure, do any of you guys know of any relatively cheap apt's on the West Side you could point me in the direction of... also if I was to resort to the east side what is the safest part of it?

thank you guys so much for the help!

Many people CHOOSE to live on the East Side as opposed to the West Side. They're both fine...but the East Side is usually cheaper. We bought a house in Edgefield because there's a sense of community that we really like on the East Side. We looked at houses in the Belmont/Vandy area...but anything we could afford over there was tiny. We love our neighborhood and have fantastic neighbors. I'm not scared of where I live. Yes...it does have more of an Urban feel...but that's ok with me. The more established neighborhoods are Lockeland Springs, Edgefield, Inglewood. Alot of the areas on the west side of Gallatin Road are not as far along as the east side of Gallatin Road.

I would spend a Saturday or two in the areas you are considering and see which one feels like a place you want to live. In East Nashville...check out the bars, coffee shops, restaurants around 5 Points (Woodland and 11th).

Good Luck

East Nashville is much closer to downtown than West Nashville. East Nashville is undergoing significant gentrification (again, not meaning political but people putting money and effort into revitalizing the area). Chances are if your not in a gang or your best friend isn't a convicted felon you won't be affected. A lot of people who post opinions about East Nashville on here probably haven't been over here in 10 years (maybe the occasional softball game in Shelby Park - keep those doors locked! hah just kidding). Anyway that being said, if you don't know anyone over here (particularly in East Nashville/Inglewood area) I would probably suggest starting out renting in Hillsboro Village or West End area. You will probably find yourself hanging out in East Nashville quite a bit though. I guess this is sort of the alternative area of Nashville. Alt country resident Todd Snider kind of summed it up one time, he said it reminded him of Austin in the 1970's. So whatever you decide good luck.
