We are moving to Murfreesboro from out of state and have a 12 year old with severe Autism. I know that all schools have special education services but some districts will actually have a class only for Autistic students. Does anyone know of a middle school in Murfreesboro that has a program like this? Our son is currently in a self-contained special ed classroom but is mainstreamed for 2 hours per day. We also have two typical younger children, one of whom is in school, so recommendations for an elementary school is appreciated as well. I just cannot seem to find much information about specific special education programs.

Thanks.

I hate to tell you this but you are not going to find anything like that in the Murfreesboro School District. I have a child that is 3 and he is currently in the preschool program. There are only 2 schools that offer an autism classroom for preschool only. It is Wilson Elem School which I believe has only been open a few years and Stewarts Creek Elementary. Tennessee was good for early intervention but not after 3 years old. We are currently putting our house on the market and moving out of this state. Murfreesboro is a very nice town and great for families but for us we are trying to get him some therapy as he is non-verbal and he tries really hard to talk but cannot. I am on several waiting lists for him to get speech therapy but not much available plus my insurance will only pay for 25 visits a year. Tennessee does not have that law that insurance compainies have to pay for therapy for Autism dx. I am sad that we are leaving, it is avery nice town. Good Luck.

I too am looking at various schools for spec. ed (altho not autism). Here is a link you may find helpful. It's to the Murfreesboro City Schools Dept. of Spec. Ed. There's a lot of info, and contact numbers. Good luck!
