I am driving to SC for Christmas. I plan to leave Tuesday morning around 8:30am. What will the traffic on I24 toward Chattanooga be like at that time of the morning? I will be leaving from the Bellevue area. Thanks.

Once you get on I-24 heading south the traffic should be okay. As you probably already know, expect heavy traffic until you get to that point; you will be catching the tail end of the commuter traffic. There will be a larger than normal amount of traffic on I-24 due to the upcoming holiday, but probably nothing to worry about.

I assume you know to not try to go down Monteagle Mountain if there's snow or ice.

Alleycat, I don't even know where Monteagle Mountain is. I am trying to avoid I40 through Asheville. I hate drive through the mountains there and I was told that the Chattanooga thru Atlanta route would be less mountainous. I have never done this drive before.

Monteagle is about three-quarters of the way to Chattanooga. There is one very steep descent going from Nashville to Chattanooga. You'll know it when there's smoke coming from the brakes of semi-trailer trucks. Luckily, the worst of it is only a couple of miles long.

The route is less mountainous than going over the Great Smokey, but it is steep in places around Chattanooga.

Thanks alleycat. Do you know of a website or something where I could check to see if they have closed that part of 24 due to weather? I found one site but it was more of a description of the area than any thing else.

The TDOT website might.

I didn't mean to scare you. If there's snow or ice they will close it; or, more accurately, it will close itself with a pile of vehicles at the bottom. ;-)

Seriously, if the weather isn't too bad on the day you're traveling, Monteagle won't be too bad either.

I went to college on Monteagle Mountain. It isn't bad at all. I can remember one, maybe two times that they closed I-24 due to weather. There were a handful of bad accidents during my four years there, but they were almost all due to some hotshot trying to do 85 or 90 down the mountain in less-than-ideal conditions. You will be fine.
