Does anyone know how the economy & job market in Nashville area are now? Is it as bad as most places are? I know it was good last year. I was planning on moving there soon, but anyone I talk to says do not move there without a job. I guess I should have moved last year! I would appreciate anyones input. Thanks.

There are plenty of "rent jobs" here in Nashville. It all depends on what you want. If you want to move here and have a job with a nice office and a $300K house, you may have a little more trouble than if you rent a small cheap apartment (aka the Room of Doom...LOL), live very bare-bones and build from there. That is the path I took in 94.

I recommend heeding the warning of not to come here without a job, unless you are up for a 10.00 an hour gig, those are plentiful.

I recommend not moving ANYWHERE without a job. (Unless, as allydriver said, you are up for a $10/hr job.)

(Or unless you're currently between jobs anyway--then moving won't hurt.)

It all depends on how badly you want to be here and if you are moving here with your family or by yourself. I moved here by myself, so I was the only one I needed to consider at that time. I was willing to really rough it and build my life in TN from the ground up so I spend a few years a little hungry and without furniture. After moving here I worked in an entry-level position at the Opryland Hotel and relied on free day old danishes or a 52 cent yogurt for my lunch or dinner. Their fruit punch was free and actually one of the better fruit punches I have ever had. I could never have done this though if I had a wife or family at that time.

Thanks for the help. We live in CA because of family, & my husband only makes $12.00 hr. & I can't find a job. So I would assume $10.00 hr. in Nashville would be about the same as $12.00 here! We want out of CA so bad, maybe we should just take the chance. We really love TN. So atleast there is some work, we would just need to rough it for awhile! Thanks again.

How do you live in CA on $12 an hour? Wow! The COL there is outrageous. The $10 an hour here would go a lot further then the $12 in CA I would be sure. If you got a $10 hour job as well you should be fine. Rent is cheap here.

Like everyone has said, if you can make it emotionally and financially then wait. AT & T just announced that they are laying off 12,000 workers (they have a big building downtown), Whirlpool shut down recently, and numerous other mom & pops/corporate companies are closing up shop. There probably isn't a place in this country that isn't suffering a setback. However, the cost of living in the Nashville area is no doubt cheaper than California. Gas here is $1.55-?, rent $550-?, car insurance is definitely cheaper, car registration under $100 and I don't think anywhere in California offers these low prices. Plus there is no state tax on your wages (taxes may apply if you have investment income). There are jobs and if you are willing to work any hours, any days then you can find them. If you are used to living on $12 an hour in California then two of you each making $7-10 an hour here would be good living!

I would definitely recommend you acquire employment if possible prior to making the move.

One of the big tire plants also just announced shutting down passenger tire production and laying off quite a few employees. I forget which one it was. Firestone of Bridgestone I think.
