My wife is pregnant with out first child and due in April. Obviously we haven't "shopped" for daycare before, but we will need it because we both work full time. We visited Gardner School today and really liked it, but they seem to have a huge waiting list. I doubt a spot would be available by the time our baby is 6 weeks old. Does anyone have any suggestions? We're looking for a place near either our house in Hermitage, my office in Green Hills or my wife's office downtown.

All help is much appreciated!

Assuming you are interested in licensed facilities, start by looking through the tennessee department of human services website for 3 star daycares in your zipcodes of interest. Tennesse Department of Human Services (http://www.tennessee.gov/humanserv/childcare/providers-map.htm - broken link)
I can't provide much of an endorsement yet, because my son is only turning 6weeks old tomorrow, but we will be using Grace M Eaton CC, which is near downtown--and we have been impressed with our visits thus far.

If you are willing to gamble on stay-at-home-moms and unlicensed places, you can find a lot of options on the childcare tab on craigslist. They are usually cheaper, but you have to do a lot more legwork to make sure that everything will work out.

Congrats on the birth of your son!

I started with Human Services and got some ideas. I was hoping to get some information from parents who have taken their kids to some of these child care facilities rather than just trusting what the centers and the state have to say about it. I had not found Grace M Eaton, so I appreciate you pointing me in that direction. We're definitely wanting a licensed facility.

If you think of it let me know what you think of Grace Eaton after your son has been there a while. If you don't mind my asking, how much do they charge?

Thank you--I'll let you know how they turn out--we're paying something like 180 a week.
