We moved 4 large dogs and 2 cats here from CT. I went to the pet store and bought a rabbit cage (yes, to use for cats). It was long enough to put a small box at one end for some litter just in case. The cats never used it which many people told me they wouldn't. We stopped overnight 2 times and stayed at hotels that let us bring in all 6 pets. We had some pills the vet gave us for the cats, but we never used them. Oh, we also put a blanket on the top area of the cage so it made them feel like they were in a little home and more secure. We stayed at a Comfort Inn.

At the time we moved down from MI, we had three cats (four now! lol). We put some calming powder in their food the morning we left and drove straight through with minimal stops. They were cool as a cucumber and were significantly less noisy than I expected. One of my cats is extremely sensitive so I'm suprised she didn't urinate or anything. I believe what helped her through it was putting her in the large crate with the oldest cat. He's naturally very comforting - calm and adapts to change very well.

We drove down from upstate NY to Knoxville. It was a 12 hour drive. We didn't stop for the night but stopped to let the animals out to walk around. The cat we kept in a crate in the truck and the Pomeranian was sleeping on the stuff. I had a travel litter box in the crate with the cat, but I did have a collar and leash to walk him when we stopped.
The cat only howled for 6 hours of the trip. We didn't drug either animal. Personally I think the Pomeranian travelled worse then the cat. He goes nuts barking at trucks and motorcycles.

Moved from Ct in 1997 with a 60 pound Sheltie..as others said, most hotels/motels are pet friendly. It won't be a problem, the few who do not accept will happily tell you who does accept.

We moved from Vermont to Hendersonville last year with 3 little dogs. We only stopped when we needed to, the dogs adapted. We had no problem in the hotel we stayed in. Just relax, enjoy the trip and know that the move will be worth it....to get out of Vermont.
