Give the Richland/Cherokee Park/Whitland neighborhood a look (just pass 440 off West End). It's not as central as Hillsboro/Belmont, but it's still extremely close to the city center and very easy to get around. These are small neighborhoods that blend into one another, and they are great walking neighborhoods with mostly older, beautiful architecture and, except for Cherokee Park, all have sidewalks, which is rare in this town.

In one direction towards Sylvan Park, which is also a cool neighborhood, but probably not quite where you're looking to live, there's a nice block within walking distance that features a few nice neighborhood restaurants. And in between these neighborhoods and Sylvan Park, you'll get the Greenway around McCabe golf course. Walk 10 minutes on this greenway and you'll be at Richland Creek.

In the opposite direction near Whitland, you have Elmington Park which is a great place for kids and sports activities.

The bigger houses in Whitland and Cherokee Park are beautiful, and recent sales have been in the $1.5M - $1.6 range. Richland is a bit more, but still usually less than $2M. Your biggest problem here will be finding inventory.

I also moved to Nashville from a big city, and, although physically not that far, Brentwood was too suburban for me as well. I've been very happy in this area.
