So ive been working here 2 weeks now. What makes The 1-40 and I-24 sections where they meet so slow? Are there just too many cars for the road? or is it just due to a few drivers here and there that drive way to slow and cause everyone else to back up? Im always curious because I never see such a reason for the backups other than just too many vehicles ??

Too many vehicles....and everyplace there is a merge...you always have people in the right that need to get all the way over to the left and vice versa. Having 3 Interstates converge on downtown Nashville was a recipe for disaster. In my opinion...they could have done a much better job at designing it back in the day.

I recall reading a journal article back in college that Eisenhower's administration wanted the interstates to be largely rural and to connect to cities through larger state highways. But, of course, Congress had other ideas and now we have gridlocked interstates.

They certainly are....and the gridlock starts earlier and goes later than it did even a year or so ago (at least it seems that way).

It's the same thing that makes any merging of interstates/freeways/highways/whatever in any heavily populated area a hassle. It's a combination of a lot of annoying factors and no large metro area is immune from it.

Sadly, its bad everywhere now. Have you tried using Lebanon Pike to Briley and then back to 40. Might want to look into Music City Star. It could be worse, you could be on 65 or 24 the whole time.

65 South actually isn't that bad during rush hour. Coming through the city stinks in all directions, but once you get on 65S it actually moves pretty well until you get to the bottom of Franklin headed towards Spring Hill.

I take Lebanon Road to downtown from Mt. Juliet every morning between 8:15-9 and then back out east from 5:45-6:?? and I rarely have trouble.

Not sure if TDOT has data on vehicle counts + number of wrecks. May not be public data?
