On Friday I'll be traveling from Memphis towards Knoxville on I-40 - should hit Nashville between 3-4 pm. Is it worth taking the longer 840 south by pass or should I stay on I-40 through the middle of the beast?

Also, later the next week we'll be spending 2-3 days in Nashville - staying near the Airport. What are the must do/must see things we should take in? Best restaurants to see live music (we aren't bar people)? Is the Hermitage worth seeing? We figured Grand ole Opry area and downtown but maybe there are other nuggets worth seeing. Is Grand ole Opry just a tourist trap?

I would go 840,tho it is a little longer, but at least you won't have to deal with rush hour traffic that starts around 3. It may actually save you time because you may hit traffic/accidents, etc. anywhere from the west side of Nashville all the way to east of Nashville in Lebanon before you get to smooth sailing again.

No.

However, it doesn't take much for traffic to snarl even with the smallest accident. Be sure to check TDOT's web site and maybe even get their tweets. They're good about reporting any traffic incidents whether it's from construction or accidents.

Check TDOT's website to check for construction. I'm sure there is construction at some point on 40. I don't think there is anything on 840.

Also, it might be a good idea to get gas before you reach 840. There are some stations along the way, but some of them are a ways off of the road.

You may decide 840 is too much of a detour to get from 40 back to 40 East.

A better bypass may be to use the West Briley flyover & keep on Briley Parkway past Opryland & re enter 40 from Briley Parkway. By that tine you are past I-24. There may be some backups before you get to Lebanon. This could be a good stretch to get off I-40 & get some cheap gas (as cheap as it gets in the metro area). Most of the Airport hotels are just off Briley.

On your return trip this is the same area to check out the Hermitage & the Grand Ole Opry. At the Hermitage you get some Old Hickory history. If you want to try the Grand Ole Opry you can get it at Opry.com, Facebook, Sirius XM radio or good ole 650WSM on the AM dial. Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays 7-9 ish from now till the end of the year.

I agree with the Briley Pkwy route. 840 goes too far out of the way.
