Well, I ended up taking 840 loop around, boring, long, but basically free of traffic until it rejoined I-40 east of the airport at RUSH HOUR!!. So traffic was backed up at that point and slow for the next 15-20 miles. Coming back to Tulsa, we took another route from Nashville. We spent a few days in Nville and Franklin and took I-24 North to Clarksville and ultimately to Puducah, KY. There we linked up wt US 60 to Springfield, Mo. While this added some time on the travel and 40 miles was 2 lane, the lack of traffic made it a much less stressful trip. I-40 from Little Rock to Knoxville can be a meat grinder. If you aren't driving 8-10 mph over the 70 speed limit you are a hazard. (Of course I don't mind going faster but it makes my wife nervous). The thing is a good # of drivers go 10-20 over the speed limit and it is wall to wall trucks.

840 doesnt come anywhere close to airport. Im not even sure they're in the same county. Do you mean Briley Pkwy? Traffic would never be backed 15-20 miles on I-40 east. Ive never ever seen that happen in my lifetime. That would be a line of cars from Airport to Lebanon, which is nearly impossible.

or construction?
I thought they took out the bit where the road shifts?
or the road narrows to 2 lanes as you get to US 431?

Where is US 431? Construction on I-40 has been done for years now. Are you talking about Bellvue area or Wilson County?

Maybe, but it drops to 2 lanes each way way before that. It drops to two lanes about 6-7 miles before that at hw 109

I drive that every day, and there are days when traffic comes to a standstill on 40 eastbound. First you have 4 lanes merging into 2, then there's the 840 traffic merging onto 40, all within a mile or so of each other. I've also been on 840 when it's come to a crawl as it merges onto 40. It doesn't happen every day, but there are days when, for whatever reason, traffic gets clogged around there. For the life of me I don't understand why the state didn't widen 40 all the way to 840 when it widened 40 around Mt Juliet a couple of years ago.

Yes,i have seen this too. Its never a long backup though and Ive certainly never seen it go all the way to airport or even remotely close to mt. juliet.
