Several of you make valid points about the vacant, forested areas north of Nashville, along the Highland Rim. Those would throw the density calculations. I owner if those are unique to Nashvlle; Chattanooga has Lookout Mountain, and Atlanta has Stone Mountain and the Applachian foothills.

Another of Nashville's geographical pecularities hasn't been mentioned: The Cumberland River, an entrenched meander (I learned that in Tennessee studies, school) whose wide bends make east-west routes through the CBD almost impossible without multiple bridges. Not that it's impossible to create mass transit there, but it has all the factors of difficulty, including hills, narrow ROWs, and low density. Nevertheless, I wish you luck in trying!

Lookout Mountain is actually a separate municipality from Chattanooga, though the sides of the mountain itself (which are basically uninhabitable) are part of the city limits. Interestingly, if Chattanooga was able to claim the town on top of the mountain, it would actually boost the density.

Stone Mountain is well outside Atlanta city limits.

The point with Nashville's northwest side is that they are in the city limits, and therefore significantly impact the municipal density.

Not over 2 million yet. It will likely be slightly over that mark (~2,025,000-2,050,000) in 2020. I'll take a look at the numbers when I get home and try to give you a better idea.
