Can any locals tell me what to expect for February weather? Will it be like January--several cold days and an occasional warm one? Does it start to get warmer in February or is that the worst part of winter?

This is my first Tennessee winter and I just want to know how much more cold to expect. In coastal Georgia we were planting flowers in Februrary and welcoming spring but in upper Michigan it is the worst month of the year. How is it here?

I have no cold tolerance and have been whining since November that I am freezing!! I hope I toughen up for next winter.

It's really hard to say. It could be relatively warm for most of the month, or cold for most of the month, or, more likely, a combination of the two. Only the wooly worms know for sure. ;-)

Traditionally January is our coldest month, but for the past few years we seem to have had a "late winter" and some of the coldest days will be in February or even early March.

Parthenon in snow, Feb. 11, 2007 [Centennial Park, Nashville]

I consider February the beginning of spring in Nashville. The days are noticeably longer, the first spring ephemerals such as hepatica begin to bloom in the woods, and there's good chance you'll have a brilliant sunny day or two with blue skies. There's also a good chance you'll get some real winter weather. Ice storms, sleet, snow--February may bring any or all of these. I took this photo last February. The divided temperament of Nashville in February is captured in the scene: there's snow on the ground and yet look at the rose-colored clouds breaking to reveal the stunning blue sky.

February in Nashville is dramatic and exciting: you never know what you're going to get, but it will probably be memorable.

Thank you for sharing that photo! We are looking forward to the change of seasons and "snow" when we move to Nashville. I am sure it will take me some time to acclimate to the colder climate in the winter...though we had our share of cold days and mornings in Poway (CA). Last winter we had mornings that it was 28 degrees when I left for work at 6:30 AM.

Thanks for the responses. Alleycat do you know how to contact these worms and get me an answer?

That is a beautiful picture but I sure hope the snow skips Nashville this February. I guess we will find out on Ground Hogs Day if spring is coming. Mostly I am scared to drive in it. I drove in snow once, hit black ice and ended up wrapped around a telephone pole--haven't done it since.

We were in San Diego for several years but with the lack of humidity, cold there did not seem as cold as cold on the east coast. If that makes sense.

I am so looking forward to spring. Everyone I have met says that I will just love the spring and summer here as there is so much to do and it is pretty.

I visited Nashville for the first time last year from February 1-3 and it was even more snowy than in that picture. The locals assured me that "it's normally not this cold!" and "Please don't run away!" lol.. it was great Very nice people even when it was freezing.

I contacted the worms (some of my best friends are worms). They said not to put away your sweaters just yet.

It's suppose to be nice this February! I don't want to freeze the whole time I am visiting .....Maybe the worms have mistaken and it will actually be nice and warm
