My daughter just got into Vanderbilt Law School. She can't afford much and doesn't drive. Where is a safe place for her to live within walking distance to the Law School? I'm a nervous mother because she will be walking home after studying late.

The area around Vanderbilt is expensive, so I would start here for ideas.

She might also want to look into a share situation. What does "can't afford much" translate to? And not driving will even further limit her.

There are plenty of safe places to live that are within walking distance of Vanderbilt, but the problem isn't so much with safety as it is with affordability. Really anything that is walkable within 10-15 minutes is going to be safe. The other thing to consider is that Vanderbilt students and employees ride MTA for free (I assume that is still the case). Vanderbilt is at the center of several bus lines that would make getting to and from school easy. The #3, #5, #7 all stop within a block of the Law School and have frequent 20 minute headways during the weekdays.
