Brooklynites! Is St. Marks Street, Between Carlton and Vanderbilt, safe? (Prospect: apartment, neighborhood)

I'm from out of town and don't know the area too well. I'm looking at an apartment located on this street for me, my husband and our 2 year-old daughter.

We're going to have some friends go and look at the place, but I thought I'd check here too.

The neighborhood is called Prospect Heights. For what it's worth it's next to Park Slope.

I would consider this neighborhood to be a little past up and coming. There are still a few rough patches here and there, but overall I think it's ok. Your near the library and park which is also good.
