Help!! My husband is in the Army and will be working out of Fort Campbell beginning sometime in the summer of 2015...you never know until the last minute with the Army. I have never moved more than 10 miles from where I grew up in Maryland and am completely overwhelmed by this process! We have three cats, a large dog, and two horses. We would need to rent for the first few months until we are certain he is staying at Fort Campbell and then we would be looking to buy. Here are our concerns if anyone has any advice or suggestions:

-Location! I am a complete country girl...where we live now in Maryland we have zero neighbors...you can't even see another house from our house! I do like people, but prefer to live in a very rural setting! From visiting the Nashville area in years past, I fell in love with Franklin/Brentwood areas, but that will be too long of a commute for my husband...Any suggestions on a country area between Ft. Campbell and Nashville?

-Having a basement...from online searches I have seen that most Nashville area homes do not have basements. Having a basement would be comforting to me because of tornadoes. I am terrified of tornadoes, and while we do get an occasional warning here in Maryland, my feeling is that it is more common in Tennessee? Any thoughts?

-Horses...we have been taking care of our own horses on our farm for the past 4 years. When we buy we will be looking for a farm, but I'm assuming it will be difficult to find a farm for rent. I would need to find a nice boarding facility not too far from wherever we end up. Ideally, we'd love to rent a tenant house on a farm, but again...I'm not sure how realistic that would be to find!

-School district...no kids for us yet, but I am an elementary school teacher and would love to work in a great school district.

We are planning to visit in March to get a feel for different areas and look for a place to keep our horses. I've never traveled north or west of Nashville, so I don't even know what to expect, but any ideas or suggestions would be so appreciated.

The good news is that most everything between Ft. Campbell and Nashville is pretty rural/small town.

This is one agency I know of that specializes in rural houses and land. You could start with them and see if they can have someone help you find a rental.

Franklin and Brentwood would be too far, in my opinion, for him. Besides, the businesses in and around Clarksviolle is geared toward the military lifestyle, with discounts etc. Franklin/Brentwood, while they have their quiet areas, are probably much more congested than what you are used to.

You also could look just across the Kentucky state line around Oak Grove, Hopkinsville, and Cadiz. That whole area is VERY rural. I don't have any ideas for how to rent a home with acreage there, though.

For a teaching job, Google the local county and city school systems there. They all post their job search requirements online.

Best of luck to you.
