Hi everyone! My husband and I are looking to make a move to Nashville in the coming months and I would love some input on the area and some areas around it. We're moving from GA and have visited a few times and just love the city and all that it has to offer. But we also love our 10 animals and need to live in a more rural area to accommodate all of our furry needs. My main concern is this: we are a diverse family and we want to be in an accepting community. One of the reasons we have chosen the Nashville area is the diversity and the acceptance that we've noticed and received when we visit. But, speaking from personal experience in GA, I know that day-to-day life is different and that there tends to be less acceptance the further you live from a city center. We are experiencing that where we live now, in Athens. Can anyone give me any insight about the areas surrounding Nashville? We are a family of four created through adoption, my husband and I are white and our children are African American. We pretty much stick out like 4 sore thumbs in most places down here and we are tired of the looks and, mostly, the rude comments. We're looking for a more progressive area that's not too terribly far away from our family in GA. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Davidson county is probably the bluest area of mid-state, but you would also probably be happy in Thompson Station/Leipers Fork area of Williamson County.

International adoption and mix-raced adoption is pretty common in the area so I don't think that should be too big of an issue. People are used to seeing mixed race families.

There are some rural-ish areas of Nashville (which includes the entire Davidson County Metro area), so you could probably find a place where you could have all of your animals inside the county. There is a farm next door to me with cows and horses and I live in the Antioch area of Nashville/Davidson County.

I have friends in bi-racial relationships and others with bi-racial children. They have had problems in the past with comments from strangers, etc, but they tell me things are better than they used to be just a few years ago.

Anywhere in Nashville except Belle Meade, Brentwood, Hendersonville. And there will be plenty of accepting folks in these places. Best bets: East Nashville, North Nashville (germantown, salemtown, hopegardens) South Nashville, Antioch, Madison.

One of my co-workers and his husband (legally in CA) moved to Franklin with their two adopted kids, one African American and one Asian American. My co-worker is white and his husband is Asian American. They kids are doing great.

My husband and I are an interracial couple and we have run into problems in Bellevue. Your best bet is to stay in Nashville metro, if you start venturing out to rural areas in Tennessee you may receive more comments.
