My boyfriend and I are moving to Hendersonville in 2 weeks and are hoping to find "our bar". We are moving from Buffalo where we have tons of corner bars and hole in the wall places, nothing too fancy, just cheap beer. On our visit there we didn't come across anything like this. Our first stop was dougie ray's. We saw the crowd outside and left. Next stop silverado's. We chugged our beers because I was a little uncomfortable with the setting. Then we drove to Nashville and stopped at the beer seller (we love craft beers and trying anything new). It was like waking into a frat party.

Any suggestions on small places to grab a cheap beer with some locals?

Hmm...there's a few in East Nashville. 3 Crow, Red Door East, Beyond the Edge and if you want something more gritty...try Dinos on Gallatin Rd.

In Hendersonville: Sam's Sports Bar and Grill @ Indian Lake. Or Anchor High Marina near the dam.

Also the whippoorwill on the square in Gallatin.

Our hotel was actually right across the street from barefoot charlie's. We really enjoyed it! As far as the bars in East Nashville, are they safe areas? From what I've seen, it doesn't have a very good wrap.

Edgefield, what do you mean by gritty?

Thanks for the responses!

For an urban neighborhood it's safe. If you aren't comfortable with that...then it might not be for you. By gritty...I mean an old school smokey dive bar that's not hip (at least not on the surface). It's been there forever and it wasn't created for or by the "hip" crowd. It's just a place I thought of when you said corner bar and locals. If you think the 5 points area seems unsafe...I may be off base recommending these bars to you though.

That description actually sounds like a place we would love. I don't know much about 5 corners or East Nashville at all actually. But based on things said on this forum, and a woman from my work is from Nashville said stay out of the East side. We'll have to try that place out! Thanks!

5 Points is at Woodland Street and 11th St. Drive by and check it out sometime....it's really not scary. Anyone who makes a blanket statement to stay away from the East side....must not know much about it...not to insult your coworker or anything. It's not for everyone...but some of the city's most popular restaurants and bars are in East Nashville.

I'd also recommend the Family Wash...it's more of a pub than bar, but definitely has a local feel to it. It's also in East Nashville but isn't really close to 5 Points.

I'd echo vivelafrance's and 46Barb's sentiments on Hendersonville. There really aren't a lot of great watering holes up there. Sam's is probably the best...Barefoot Charlie's is okay too. Some really like Twisted Kilt, but it seems a little too much like Hooters from what I've heard. Most bars up there are going to be more "restaurant" than "bar". You'll also find a few more bars down in Rivergate.

We always head down to East Nashville when we want that kind of experience.
