I do think their stouts are probably their weak link at Yazoo. I'd call them average stouts...certainly nowhere near the quality of other southern brewers like Jefferson. And for my money, it's hard to beat a Guinness at the Family Wash in East Nasty with a shepherd's pie.

I think Yazoo does excel at the hoppy beers like the Hop Project (personally I find it a little over the top sometimes, I like an IPA once in a while but a six pack is usually too much of a good thing for me), and the Pale Ale to me is just the right balance of hop and drinkability.

poolagoo, did you try the Yazoo Sue? It's a stout that is somehow made with smoked ingredients. It is also a high alc % beer so you can only buy it at liquor stores and a few bars around here. I've heard some people love it and others think it's terrible. I've not tried it...as it sounds like I'd probably think it's on the lesser side...but others swear by it. It might be worth checking out for a stout fan like yourself.

Glad I didn't step on toes. Nashville really has stepped out as far as our culinary and beer/wine scene goes in the last 10 years. When I was in college, it was non-existant or very very much a "speakeasy" type scene...you had to know someone who knew someone who knew about the burgeoning upscale restaurant or wine bar or homebrew. In fact, Linus Hall who created Yazoo (pronounced "yeah-zoo" like the river in Mississippi it's named after) started out as a homebrewer making kegs for Vandy parties. Yada yada yada, he's on the cusp of really breaking it wide open regionally. So a big part of it is regional pride for the local guy...a large part of it is folks of a certain age will remember the beer selection ranged from Budweiser to Bud Light in most places. So we have come a long way...and it is getting better all the time (to quote the Beatles). Several new breweries have popped up recently and are working to get their products out there.

I don't recall trying the SUE but I'll give er a go. Anything smoky is fine with me, one of my all time faves is Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen - Brauerei Heller-Trum / Schlenkerla - Bamberg, Germany - BeerAdvocate
