And Clarksville and Murfreesboro have been among the biggest population gainers for the past 20 years. But they aren't exactly suburbs, either (especially Clarksville). While Clarksville has some commuters to the Nashville area, it's a big enough town and far enough away to have its own draws, namely Fort Campbell, a very large army post a little NW of Clarksville.

Murfreesboro is a little closer to Nashville, and a little more connected (via Smyrna & La Vergne)...but it's also a college town in its own right (Middle Tennessee State University) and has a number of other large employers in town.

I would say that both of these cities retain a little more of a separate identity from Nashville than Brentwood or Franklin do.
Clarksville is probably out to visit. Murfreesboro sounds like it might be a fun place to go for the day with my visiting 20 year old daughter.

The other day we first happened upon the Eastland part of East Nashville and ate at Silly Goose. Fantastic food!

We went to East Nashville yesterday and she loves it there. We ate at Marche' and it was delicious. We toped the afternoon off at the yogurt dairy bar next to Silly Goose (can't remember the name of it now) and it was wonderful!

Clarksville has a pretty neat historic downtown. I don't go there very often, so someone more familiar with the area could give some better suggestions on what to do...but it definitely has its own identity. It's somewhat of a college town, too, with Austin Peay State University.

Murfreesboro looks vastly different than it did 20 years ago. The MTSU campus has grown up a bit, and now it is one of the largest universities in the state. It has the reputation of a suitcase college (many of the students are already from the Nashville area -- so a lot go home on the weekends)...but as the city grows and adds more things to do, I think that reputation will slowly fade away. The city has more than doubled its population, from 44,922 in 1990 to 108,755 in 2010 (141.2% growth).
