The route only changes well after it gets out of the square. The most fun place to view it is downtown, I think. But it doesn't usually march the full "circle" around the soldier statue is my main point. Don't sit on the side of the circle where the old courthouse is because it turns onto Main in front of Mellow Mushroom.
You can stand, no problem, but some people do take chairs. Seeing it is no problem either unless you sit in a chair at the curb and at the last minute someone stands in front of you.

Note for next year: Arrive before 11 to find a place to park. We arrived just after 11 and had trouble. The police were zero help, too.

They changed the route, too! Actually went around the statue. There weren't any cloggers this year, but at least the emergency vehicles were back. It was much smaller last year since everyone was dealing with the flood aftermath. It's still a great parade, especially for little kids.
Fire trucks! Cowboys! Marching bands! What could be better?!
