I haven't signed up for a termite/pest control contract yet. Our small house is on a slab. I have never lived in an area where this was an issue. Has anyone had good or bad experiences with any companies? With such a small house, can't I get something at Lowe's and spray it myself? And yes, what about plants and animals/birds. Are termites a big issue here? I want to keep my house safe BUT I'm . . frugal. Thanks for any suggestions/help/advice.

I live in North FL and have for over 20 years, never have had any problems with any bugs.Rinse bottles/cans,no crumbs on floor etc.I do usual spray outside. This past week neighbor had there monthly bug man in,hard to watch, they have 3 children,2 youngsters and a baby. The bug man puts on rubber gloves and shoe protection and takes sprayer into home and then back outside to spray perimeter of home outside. These kids are barefoot most of time.

I have the service and we've not seen any problems with insects. We use Frontline and they're pretty reasonable. When we first moved in we didn't have the service and did notice some spiders that were hanging out in the garage. After they came, no spiders since.

I think having a slab home keeps the termites at bay for the most part, but it wouldn't hurt to ask a professional

We use natural insect deterrents but hire the pest co. for inspections, to be safe. So far, so good, and no poisons!

Hey CG2B,

We use Ameri Care out of Murfreesboro. Think they might have other branches as well.

We don't have kids to worry about and the treatments they use are pet safe.

We look at this as another form of homeowners insurance. If we did nothing and then needed to make repairs or treat for a problem it would probably cost more than it does on a yearly basis. The good thing we did when we signed up was pay for the year in advance. I think this locked us into a permanent discount if I am not mistaken.

We use Arrow Exterminators and like them. They come and put bait traps around the house and inspect the crawl space once a year. My husband sprays Home Defense around the foundation and doors & windows a couple of times a year. Spiders scare me and that takes care of them inside. When we were looking at houses to buy down here there were 2 houses we had initially made offers on, the inspector found termites in the crawl space, and we withdrew our offers.

Some kind of pest control is necessary. THe bugs may be a bit slow while weather is still cool. Better to use a pro than be sorry. There are spiders you don't want to mess with. Ask the pro what kind of chemicals they used. Can be in a form not saleable to consumers. If you have small children & pets take care not to poison them!
