Where can you find affordable antique furniture?

I have heard stories of outrageous mark-ups in Franklin -- are antique stores in Nashville (such as the ones on 8th ave) ridiculously overpriced or are they pretty fair?

I have always assumed that I would need to travel a bit out of the city to find fair prices... is that accurate?

Where are the best places to look for great deals? Where are the fun salvage places?

Any help is appreciated!

thanks,
jamie

It's been a while since I've went over there, but the ones on Wedgewood and 8th are more of a hodgepod. For the most part they are not upscale "shops" but multiple dealer booths and that sort of thing. They have everything for sell--from junk to some nicer things. There were a couple of places in Green Hills that was similiar but a little more organized. There were some place in East Nashville too at one time.

You pay out the nose in the upscale antique shops in Nashville, but I think that's true as well in shops out in the smaller towns. You have to find the "anything goes" type of places.

Jamie-

I could talk about this all day long I'm sure everyone has their story, but as far as Franklin prices being higher than Nashville, we've experienced the opposite. We've had great luck at the Icehouse and others, but the best all-around we've found is at Arbor Antiques. They're right across the street from the Icehouse. (Both in the Margin St. district, just off the Square.) Their estate jewelry is exceptional. Marked well below appraisal. Mine was WELL below. Nice people, knowledgeable, and great to work with. We have found more of a mark-up in the shops on Main St.

To be fair, we've only shopped maybe 5-7 places in Nashville, so I don't claim to be an authority. Just sharing what we found.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Goodlettsville also has a "Antique District" (I-65 North Exit 96 left off the interstate (coming from the south) and go about a mile to Main Street. There is a sign there that points to the Antique District...there are several places along Main Street in the heart of Goodlettsville.
