I am curious if there are any independently owned or local chains in Nashville that are like the old style Five and Dime stores. Not a Walmart or Target, or even a Dollar Store, but some type of small dry goods store that sells a variety of odds and ends, kind of like the way Woolworths used to be.

Coney, you are bringing back memories of growing up in NY. Wow, a Five & Dime store......those were the days!

I don't know of any stores like this down here.

Thank you 46Barb. I am sure there must have been dry goods stores before the Walmart/Target era, but must have gone out of business. I assume, at some time, there was also a Woolworths somewhere before the chain went out of business? I was just curious if any Mom and Pop variety stores were still around. There are still a few here and there in the northeast. It seems that CVS and Walgreens has also taken over selling this type of merchandise as well.

I LOVED the old Five & Dime Stores! In fact, I love browsing them so much that I have found them hidden within the mom and pop hardware stores. I am not sure of any specific place I can direct you to, but if you can find a mom & pop hardware store you are bound to find what you are looking for!

Yes, I'm pretty sure there were several Woolworth's located around Nashville. I know that there was at least one downtown. Of course, that was long before my time. As for local mom and pop hardware stores, I'm not sure of any in the Nashville area. There are a couple of pretty good ones that I frequented while in college, up in Cookeville, though.

There's actually a great old hardware store up the street from me at 5 Points. It's called Cumberland Hardware. They still have the old time cash register. It's full of all kinds of stuff....I like to just go in there and look around. It's also nice to be able to just run up there if you're in a pinch...instead of trekking it to Home Depot.
