The CURE m
Haunting and beautiful... "Hello image
Sing me a line from your favourite song
Twist and turn
But you're trapped in the light
All the directions were wrong"
Roger was rumoured to have had a nervous breakdown but he denies this and says that he was exhausted and needed to learn how to live like a normal person again. He quit Duran Duran while they were working on their seperate projects of Power Station and Arcadia and according to Andy Taylor (in his book "Wild Boys") there was a lot of fighting going on between some of the members. Apparently Roger was kind of caught in the middle of it all, having a foot in each camp so to speak, and the stress of it was too much for him on top of the intense media coverage they endured back then and constantly recording and touring. I can imagine that for someone who is reserved and shy by nature (as Roger was) it would be a nightmare living in that kind of madness.
I think that you can't know what it's like to have that level of fame until you've lived through it. Psychologically, it must be very difficult to stay on an even keel in that kind of environment. Imagine if you spent the first part of your life in the suburbs as just an average teenager with all of the angst and rejection that is normal for that age and then suddenly you are catapulted to world wide fame with everyone in your life falling all over themselves to cater to your tiniest whim, and the darker side where everyone wants a piece of you. It would be impossible to know who was truely your friend except the others that were going through the same thing with you, and then they start falling apart and splitting into factions... I think it's easy to see what happened with Roger. He retreated back into a normal life and I can't say I blame him. He seems to be a lot more comfortable with it all now and has been back with the band since 2004's Astronaut (which is an excellent album btw), but I suppose it's not anything like it was back then.
Anyway, that's my take on it all. There is probably a lot more to it that we'll never know and that's probably as it should be.
I'm glad he allegedly didn't really have a break down. BTW, what are some good songs on Astronaut?
'Astronaut' was the first album since 'Seven and the Ragged Tiger' to have the original five members performing together. Andy soon left again though. I like the whole album, the highlights for me personally (as always with Duran Duran) are the lesser known songs. Everyone liked "Sunrise" and "What Happens Tomorrow", and they are both very good songs but for me it's these three...
Remember Aldo Nova with his leopard print jumpsuits? Or Rainbow? The Motels~ good stuff.
