Jan Hammer is 69 years old today! From his early days leading a jazz trio, to his breakout stint with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and leading his own bands The Jan Hammer Group and Hammer, to collaborating with Elvin Jones, John Abercrombie, Jerry Goodman, Tony Williams and other jazz giants, to rocking out with Jeff Beck, Neal Schon and James Young, the guy has kicked ass across a number of genres!
Of course, he's probably best-known (by those unfamiliar with his jazz/fusion/rock repertoires) as being the composer of Miami Vice. Personally, I love his Vice work as much as anything else he's done. But he also scored other films and shows that aren't talked about nearly as much.
Here's Jan's "Finale" from the soundtrack to the 1985 flick Secret Admirer. It's the final track on the LP, and it's never been reissued on CD. This beautiful cut has a very Vice feel to it. I'd love to have the entire score, but we'll probably never see it reissued. But I never thought they'd reissue The Warriors with the entire instrumental score by Barry De Vorzon...and they did!
