N.W.A. was definitely underground in their early days, I have a few 12"s and the CIA EP from 86-87 that no one's ever heard. I'm not sure if the band as a whole could be considered underground, for there wasn't such a clear mainstream-underground dividing line at the time. They're just dope. Straight Outta Compton is definitely #1 gangsta rap album, almost the standard for the genre I'd say.
Season Of Da Siccness by Brotha Lynch Hung, gangsta n horrorcore album 2, my fav album ever, each time i listen to this album i get on a state of mind that no other album can make
Tie between Kool G. Rap's 456 and Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie, Big Pun, etc. all put out amazing (or even better) albums during the same time, but most of them had some type of pop/crossover element. These two were straight thugged out ishhhh with no filler. The East Coast was never this hard again....
