This is the only Dolly Parton song I like. She's supposedly a very charismatic lady. The season is upon us, and this song showcases her great voice. Merry Christmas.
At first, I was expecting to hear that song with the lyrics "take a letter, Maria, address it to my wife, say I won't be coming home tonight, gonna start a new life..." - but I think that's more pop than country.

Re: 'Galveston' .. I've read that the lyric "while I watch the cannons flashing" isn't particularly in reference to the Vietnam War, but the song just evokes that sort of mood, being incredibly homesick when you're somewhere far away and it's not so easy to get back. Great song.
Years ago I actually liked country, but now I generally hate it. And yet, there are still some exceptions for me. Hank Williams Senior (can't stand junior), some Glen Campbell, Willie Nelson, some Johnny Cash, and a few others here and there that I can't recall at the moment. There are also some specific songs I like, performed by artists I don't otherwise particularly care for. But I pretty much despise the newest country. Some of my coworkers were recently playing some, and I considered begging them to switch back to the rap they had been listening to before. And I HATE rap, so that should tell you what I thought of the country.
