Lots of good versions of this, but part of my purpose in life is to overwhelm the internet with Pretenders videos. Some others too, but lots of Chrissie...
According to what I've read and heard, Stan Rogers died a hero at age 33. He was aboard a plane leaving a folk festival, headed home when smoke began filling the craft. They made an emergency landing and were evacuating passengers. Survivors said that a big man with a "booming voice" kept calling out to guide them to the exit. Then, a fire broke out, killing a number of passengers, including Rogers, whose body was found near the exit. Obviously, he could have saved himself but stayed to help others.
There will be an awful lot of T-songs if "The" isn't overlooked sometimes. I think it's a case-by-case basis sort of thing. Sometimes "The" is relevant in a title and sometimes it's just not.
I'd meanwhile never heard of Stan Rogers before, but thanks to wikipedia, I now know that as a youth in Hamilton, he often spent summers with family in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, to which of course there was no rail service. That puts the song into a little clearer light.
^^^I completely agree about "The" being on a case-by-case basis. There are instances when "The" isn't necessary to the meaning. Yea! Now... Hooray for Natalie MacMaster, an amazingly talented lady! Every time, I get tickled when she starts dancing with those loooooong legs while never missing a note on the fiddle. That's fun=}
