Oscar buzz .. already!

Ten is going to make it that much more difficult to choose 'the best' .. but certainly better for more productions getting noticed.

There are always a few greats left out because of the limited amount of nominations allowed, so this should help.

I like the idea.

Normally I do not put out my Oscar Buzz until September. But with this revelation coming from the Pres. of AMPAS, it's going to be an interesting race for 2009! They used to nominate 5-10 movies back in the 30's and 40's, I believe. I guess the pres. wanted it to be a little more tantalizing for this years race (for rating purposes).

I agree. It's a shame when some really good movies get left out because of a limited number of nominations. Having 10 films nominated should fix that.

I have a bad feeling that there may be some movies that get nominated that have no business being in the running. There have been some weak movie years, and some where there were many great movies to choose from.

Marketing ploy. Now more "clunkers" can put "Best Picture Nominee" in their ads when they keep it in the theatre into the new year, and on the DVD packaging and ads.

Maybe I'm paranoid, maybe I'm just a guy with a marketing major.

One result I would think is it would make a long Oscar broadcast even lonnnnnnnnnnnngerrrrrrr. Instead of 5 movie clips to go through there will be 10. I don't know if that will be the same with the other categories.

I agree. granted, the fall movie season hasn't started yet and that's when a lot of the Oscar bait comes, out, but as of this moment, I can't even think of FIVE movies worthy of a Best Picture nom. "UP" is likely a shoe in, but what else? "The Soloist" has Oscar buzz but flopped, as have a lot of dramas. I can't picture anything coming out this sumer that's worthy Oscar bait unless I missed some smaller movies coming out (I will literally barf if "My Sister's Keeper" gets a nom!). at this rate, "The Hangover" may be a viable "Best Picture" contender

(though, to be honest, it would be nice to see more worthy comedies and sci-fi/fantasy flicks get recognition. I was so glad to see "Tropic Thunder" get some last year)

Great idea to go with 10 movies. Maybe this way "The Hangover" will get a nomination.
