Lars Von Trier's Melancholia. I thought the first part was very good, despite constantly reminding me of another Danish movie, Festen, so much... And the second part was visually arresting and just beautiful.

Thanks for this. I'm recovering from surgery so need a lot of DVD suggestions for a few weeks. Don't know how I missed this one. Love Jake, it came out in 2011 but it must not have remained in the theatres for long, as I don't recall it at all. Just added to my Netflix queue. Keep the reviews coming... your & Ans' posts keep my queue filled!

Larger cities have theatres that shows mostly/all independent films....otherwise, renting or watching online is the alternative. I have seen some awesome unknown/independent films on hulu.com and free as well!
Yes, we all said as much & agree. We were talking volume.

I'd love to have 1/2-dozen movies to choose from in a weekend. I was overjoyed the one weekend we found 2... too bad we decided to wait a few days to see one of them... it was gone from the theatres when we searched for it again.

We can hunt to find good choices online or in out-of-the-way indie theatres, if we're lucky enough to have one within driving distance. My never-will-happen fantasy is to see indie films open up inside the nation's Starbucks. I'd faint from sheer joy.
