But if they switch off the computer they effectively shut down the ship and its life support. So what do they do?
Hard to believe this film is now 50 years old. Stanley Kubrick's visionary direction still holds water, as does some of the sfx. And of course who can forget the final 30 minutes and the critically acclaimed "star gate" sequence.
We never find out much more about the black monoliths - not in this film anyway. But one of the key aspects, and a well-used aspect - is the meeting of minds between humanity and technology: can we ever trust a machine?
