i don't pay much attention to awards and what critics think. I'd call it a sleeper because nobody watches it now.
Yes, I can see how it wouldn't have mass appeal. It requires patience, some need some kind of action. I'm the person who, when we went to a Titanic museum, wanted to read every letter they had posted that people mailed from the ship, and there were dozens of them...but my bf didn't want to, so I only read a few. To me letters and writings like that really fill out the experience of immersing yourself in the history of the event, to know them as people instead of numbers. And the movie is basically that, a long conversation with really interesting people. So my bf would probably not like this movie.
The one I mentioned earlier though, "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" would appeal to both types of person, because there is action and suspense while also revealing the emotions and growth of the characters. That one I had never heard of, just came upon it browsing On Demand.
Has anyone noticed that these kind of movies tend to be on in the middle of the night only? I've seen some really good movies I'd never heard of before, by having insomnia, at 2 or 3am.

I have noticed this with TCM in particular, where they run obscure (and often provocative) films at this time of the morning. I sometimes DVR them; my DH was shocked to find me watching recordings of John Waters films (Polyester, Pink Flamingos) one morning. "This was on TCM?" he kept asking. He hardly considered it suitable breakfast fare.
The Proposal (2001 film) starring Nick Moran, Jennifer Esposito, and Stephen Lang
Blackjack (1998) starring Dolph Lundgren
