One of our very fav movies--there was a re-make in U.S., but see if you can find the original German movie. Sub-titles--but worth it. The soundtrack, with songs from Paolo Conte, is superb.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mostly Martha (original German title: Bella Martha) is a 2001 German romantic comedy drama film written and directed by Sandra Nettelbeck and starring Martina Gedeck, Maxime Foerste, and Sergio Castellitto.[3] Filmed in Hamburg, Germany, and Italy,[4] the film is about a workaholic chef who is forced to adjust to major changes in her personal and professional life that are beyond her control. The film won the Créteil International Women's Film Festival Grand Prix Award, and was nominated for the Goya Award for Best European Film in 2002. It was also nominated for the German Film Awards Outstanding Feature Film.[3]

I like the movie "Hero" with Dustin Hoffman, Geena Davis, Andy Garcia, Chevy Chase, Tom Arnold, to name a few of the many who play their parts well.

It is free to watch on youtube. It's funny and has a good storyline.

"Return of the Secaucus Seven". Sort of a low budget Big Chill made before Big Chill.

...Following...

One I can think of right off the top of my head is "The Sheltering Sky" with Debra Winger and John Malkovich.

Based on a terrific novel by Paul Bowles.

I don't think you can go far wrong with Daniel Auteuil films.

Caught, 1949 w Robert Ryan, Barbara Bel Geddes and James Mason in his first US film. More of a melodrama excellent cinematography to set mood throughout.

Just thought of another one. Lost in Translation with Scarlett Johanssen and Bill Murray.

I've been doing a movie-thon all weekend after surgery where I'll watch one, then pick one of the actors and watch another movie they are in. It's been all over the place.

I'm watching The Horse Whisperer now, landed here from August: Osage County and followed Chris Cooper. Lost In Translation will be next.

Good choices. All "quiet" movies. Well, maybe not Osage Cty.

Heal quickly.

Thank you!

Yeah August: Osage County makes you thankful for your family (assuming you have one better than theirs).

I just realized I called it 'surgery' but it was a skin cancer excision. Unfortunately it turned out to be larger than expected and what I thought was going to be a quickie jump-back-into-life thing has wound up putting me down pretty hard. It's over 3" long and at my neckline so I can't even drive because turning my head pulls the stitches. Wasn't expecting that! I'm getting to work from home though so it's not all bad
