Sixteen Candles had a very young John Cusak.
And don’t forget Academy Award Winner Forest Whitaker (he played a football player who, IIRC, lent his car to someone), and Anthony Edwards (the long running TV series ER, Top Gun, etc.), who played a stoner coming out of a van.

Also, it was Sean Penn's first major role, I believe. And also it was the first major role for Judge Reinhold.

Dang it, now I have to watch this movie again! I seem to recall not particularly being impressed with it when I watched it the first time many years ago.

I'm surprised no one has said Drew Barrymore in ET yet. Of course, Val Kilmer was in some stuff when he was pretty young-- Top Secret, Real Genius, etc. (I assume we're not talking about child stars who fell off the radar once they were no longer little kids, but actors who are known as adults who can also be found in movies when they were young.)

Also saw an episode of One Step Beyond (I think it was that, or maybe Science Fiction Theatre) with Leslie Nielson... honestly wouldn't have recognized him had I not seen his name in the credits at the beginning. Another episode of Science Fiction Theatre with Martin Milner young enough that I only recognized his voice. (Are we counting TV shows?)

The one that really shook me was a TV show with Harry Morgan actually looking young. I always joked that no matter what you saw him in, he always looked the same age. I think that was another one where I recognized his voice, then looked closely and went, "OMG!!! He actually was young once!!!!!!"

When I read the title of this thread, my first thought actually went to actors who were part of the old studio contract days of the 30s and 40s. And even as a subset of that, actors who were paired together at a very young age, like Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney; Elizabeth Taylor and Roddy McDowall etc.

Another one who comes to mind is Ron Howard, who was about 9-10 years old in the Music Man. He probably came to mind for me because that's one of my all time favorite movies.

Judge Reinhold, definitely.

Some might sat Penn's first major role was in Taps, which was the year before, but his role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High was probably bigger (more lines) and more 'iconic'.

Within the last year, I visited Mount Airy, NC...including the Andy Griffith Museum.

I asked an employee who had been there for ages if Ron Howard had visited. She said no, but that his brother Clint had been there a number of times and is very nice. She also said the actress who played Thelma Lou had moved back to the area years ago and was still there. I just looked her up to put in this post that she's still there, but she died a few days ago. I remember seeing the CD thread...about Betty Lynn...but I hadn't clicked on it and I'd forgotten that that was the actresses' name. RIP Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou).

I like Clint. Isn't he in every one of Ron's movies or something? Kind of like how you always see Brian Doyle (my favorite Murray) in movies with Bill all the time.

Yeah, I think Clint has been in a lot of Ron's films.

I fondly remember Clint and Dennis Weaver's TV series, Gentle Ben, from when I was a kid. I only wish the series had been longer.

I didn't read the children's novel it was based on.

A film was also made, as a prequel, that was supposed to be released before the TV show started, but the release date was moved to be close to Thanksgiving, and the TV series had already started airing.

I never saw the movie, but I saw every episode of the TV series.....
