I guess if you missed the original run, the live play, the sequel movie, the TV movie remake and the 10th anniversary of Patrick Swayze's death there really isn't nothing that should be luring you now. Unless you are now into the music of that era or theatrical dance and checking it out for historical purposes.

I just keep seeing references to it lately, so I was wondering if I missed a true classic. Alright then, I'm now off to go watch Remo Williams, the Adventure Begins.
Mmmm. Mixed feelings on the movie. Great dancing, great music, but a very simplistic story line with reverse shiksa story or young woman coming into power element. The depiction of the Catskills and Pocono resorts is a good overview and gloss of the era of "restricted" neighborhoods and how people coped. If you are into the arts, it is a film worth viewing. If you aren't a dance fan, "My Favorite Year," a story based on Mel Brooks' early life, is a more important film.
Beyond that, though, it's a coming of age film. If you're over 25 it's really not going to grab you like it might have when you were 17. It's the people who saw it when they were young who have the strong feelings for it, as well as those who might have had fond memories of spending summers at a vacation resort in the '60s rekindled by it.
It's a decent winter Sunday afternoon watch on cable, but I probably wouldn't rent it.
Back when it first came out, that type of dancing was unheard of. Today that dancing is nothing compared to the present audiences. But seeing it in 1986, it was a gem. I watched it several times and still think of it when some of the songs come on the radio. Sad that PS had to die so young.
I don't recall having any particular feelings about the movie itself, one way or another. The reason that I watched it at all was that, though it was set in the Catskills, it was actually filmed at the Mountain Lake Resort in Pembroke, Virginia, a place that I visited many times as a child (before the movie put it on the map) and a few times as an adult.
Under the assumption that you haven't been to Mountain Lake, I don't think you're really missing much by not seeing it.

It is classic. If you lived through that time as a young person then probably worth a look.
I saw it for the first time with my family (daughter 21) last year. Is it an outstanding movie? Definitely not, but better than the average film from that era.
