Am astute observation. It made me rethink the Campbell performance. There was a certain amount of naivete to La Boeuf. He began by grossly underestimating Mattie. La Boeuf would have been in way over his head going up against Ned Pepper's gang had he not had Wayne who knew the country and knew the type of men that they were pursuing. At the end it turned out that the girl back in Texas he thought that he would impress by bringing in Chaney, couldn't be found.
So perhaps Campbell's naivete as an actor enhanced those aspects of the character.
Still, he did have some terribly awkward deliveries of some of his lines.
It seems to me that you've read the book as well as having seen the movie. Is that correct? Have you read any of Portis' other novels, "Norwood" in particular?

You are correct about my having read the novel. I have not read "Norwood."
I know many people will not agree with me, but this past weekend I watched the Godfather trilogy and, while most people believe that Sofia Coppola was the worst cast as Don Corleone's daughter (Part III), I thought the worst casting in all 3 parts was Diane Keaton as his wife. I thought she was so bland and boring and lifeless, and just so unappealing sexually or otherwise.

I can't defend Sofia Coppola as an actress. She's really bad. Great director though!
But yeah, I have never understood the love for Diane Keaton. I can't think of a single movie where her performance impressed me. She is rarely bad. Just mediocre. Maybe that isn't her fault? Maybe she just gets characters who aren't all that well written?
I thought she was good in Looking for Mr. Goodbar.
That was the one movie I was going to mention. But I think that's it. I'm not a fan.
For me, she was mostly just a carrier for that new guy Richard Gere at the time
Kate Winslet isn't Hispanic. She's English, Irish, and Swedish.
