I have mentioned this in another thread but Warner Brothers has announced that it's next serial movie franchise after Harry Potter and Hobbit will be McCaffrey's Pern!! Screenwriter for Dragonsflight was hired in mid November.

Oh, WOW!

I remember that issue.....not so much the splitting of the Earth (except for the exciting conclusion) but certainly recall "The Last Television Broadcast on Earth".

As far as I can see, the Pern series is , really, the best next big leap, for movies, of that genre. I can't think of a better one.
