Murder By Death

Peter Falk, David Niven, Maggie Smith, Truman Capote,
James Coco, Ellen Burnstyn,
Alec Guinness, Peter Sellars, plus more...so clever.

Airplane was a break thru comedy, yes.

The Heat
...Sandra Bullock, recently.

There is something to be said about the older comedies.
Murder By Death and The Producers....and...
Can't go to wrong with Mel Brooks or Monte Python.
Blazing Saddles, High Anxiety, Space Balls, MP & the Holy Grail.
Spinal Tap has it's 'siblings' that are equally funny, Best in Show, and, A Mighty Wind.
Blues Brothers, Caddyshack, Airplane, (etc) of course.
The Toy (Richard Pryor)
Real Genius (Val Kilmer)
See Spot Run (David Arquette)
Without a Paddle (Seth Green, Dax Shepard, Mathew Lillard)
There are more but can't think of them.

In general, if anyone asked me for suggestions for a "hysterically funny comedy" my mind wouldn't go to anything in the last several decades.

I hope some day you'll get a chance to be near a theater doing a series of 1930s-1940s comedies.
