The Evil Dead series ... The Evil Dead (the 1981 original, not the 2013 remake) , Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness (Army of Darkness 2 is slated for 2016), by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell.

Sorry but the cult classic series are a bit cheesy and campy, though that is part of their charm. The movies are also over the top chilling, gruesome, violent and humorous.

Oh, yes, and a true story. So horribly sad.

In searching on Amazon for a different movie the other day, I saw listings for Sea of Love (Pacino/Barkin) and Cruising (Pacino). Two of the scariest movies ever, imo.

Also The Bone Collector.

I don't know if I would call them "horror". At least not in the "Chainsaw" genre. But very scary and suspenseful.

If you like haunted house/ghost type movies, then I suggest you rent The Changeling

Hands down my favorite and still manages to creep me out every time I watch it in the dark.

Generally not my type of stuff, but some of the better ones for me are the following:

The original Night of the Living Dead is still the best, as the remakes aren't scary:

My top 2 Zombie movies are:
1.Dawn of the Dead 2004-Ving Rhames, Ty Burrell (modern family! ), Sarah Polley and Jake Weber
2. A quirky little film called Zombie Honeymoon- love that it was filmed in Jersey.
Other great non-zombie movies that are scary, strange, eerie are:
1. Never Let Me Go
2. Let Me In
3. Let The Right One In
4. 28 days later
5 28 weeks later
6.Mimic
7. The Others-Nicole Kidman is great in this movie!
8.Human Centipede-disgusting but riveting
9. VHS
10. Blair Witch
11. Absentia- very weird- loved it
