I certainly have no idea how this film avoided the kiss-of-death NC-17 rating which still boggles my mind as well as lots of others; it certainly wouldn't have grossed $91,000,000 as it has so far.

Editor Thelma Schoonmaker won three Oscars for editing three previous Scorsese films (Raging Bull/The Aviator/The Departed), and she certainly did a fine job here, but it certainly didn't feel like a three hour movie to me either.

It seems like companies have the ratings board in their pockets. Of course, it wouldn't have made the money it has if it had been rated NC-17.
