I disagree. American audiences have always liked those three things.

Cinderella Man comes immediately to mind. Sometimes I think movies just need better titles. Would anyone guess from the title that it is about a washed up boxer who becomes a hero during the Depression?

Going to add two more recent movies:

Lockout
Get the Gringo

Funny and entertaining. I was able to laugh watching this two movies and they aren't even comedy genre. Too bad I can't say the same thing about 100% of the comedy genre movies that are coming out in Hollywood now. Not a single comedian actor is funny. NOT a SINGLE ONE.

Just saw Inside Llewyn Davis. I really enjoyed this portrait of a folk singer in the early 1960s.

Zabriskie Point. I could watch it over and over just for the cinematography.

My favorite "flop" is Hudson Hawk, although not as big a flop as advertised.

For all the infamy Waterword has attained as a big budget flop, it's not even in the top 50. Worldwide box office receipts exceeded production costs, and by standard industry figures, lost only around $43 million. All of the top 50 bombs lost more than $60 million.

How did Evan Almighty end up costing $175 million?

I agree. It's an excellent drama that I almost missed myself because of that silly title.

While I wouldn't go so far as to say I loved Waterworld, I did like it. Parts of the movie I really liked quite a lot. Other parts (mostly any involving Dennis Hopper) were so stupid that they almost ruined the movie for me. It was a great concept where the script needed another polish before they went to film.

Waterworld got a bad rep for going way over budget. I think it was the first big Hollywood movie since JAWS to be filmed almost entirely on the ocean. And by the way, JAWS also went way over schedule and over budget. There's a reason directors don't film movies on the ocean.
