Well, apparently while you chose just the "heavy" kids to be picked on, other children were picked on for a number of reasons. And having a nutball, religious mother could go a long way to making her a social outcast, no matter what she looked like.
The novel described Carrie as being heavyset; no one on this thread who read the book is making that up.
I think it's a good idea to always watch the movie BEFORE reading the book it was based on. If you have the opportunity, of course. This is because (1) you won't be disappointed by the differences, and (2) you will appreciate the differences in the book more because you have respect for the original story writer more.
i read carrie years before it was made into a movie. if she was portrayed as heavy by stephen king, it left no impression on me whatsoever. to me, sissy spacek is carrie. just like morgan freeman is alex cross. or frank sinatra is edward X. delaney. or steve mcqueen is jake holeman. and humphrey bogart is captain queeg.
Hollywood has run out of ideas to make movies with . The Originals are always better so much better and yes Carrie should have been left alone . Im sick of remakes do something original Hollywood or stop making movies .

there are numerous instances where the remake is better than the original.
scent of a woman (1992). al pacino, chirs o'donnel, gabrielle anwar. forgetaboutit.
the girl with the dragon tatoo (2011). daniel craig, rooney mara. follows the story closer than the sweedish original. rm portrays lisbeth salander much better imho.
heat (1995). de niro, pacino. michael mann remakes his own movie; L.a. takedown (1989).
man on fire (2004).
scarface (1983).
the maltese falcon (1941). directed by john huston, stars humphrey bogart, mary astor, peter lorre.
his girl friday (1940). cary grant, rosalind russell. remake of the front page (1931).
Well, apparently while you chose just the "heavy" kids to be picked on, other children were picked on for a number of reasons. And having a nutball, religious mother could go a long way to making her a social outcast, no matter what she looked like. Besides, that made the story even more. She could have been that attractive, popular girl, had she not had the restrictive upbringing she had.
I thought she was perfectly cast.
Spacek was well cast. IMO had the right quirky quality.
She could play younger convincingly , Sissy Spacek was born in 1949,
was a senior in high school in 1967 but could still play one in 1976.

Excellent point.
Personally, I think some people just aren't real movie fans. They always have things to criticize.
Other than a brief nude scene in "Prime Cut" Sissy hadn't done much to this point, and the movie boosted her into stardom. Much more than the movie, which I found good for a horror movie, what impresses me is just how much of a class act Sissy remained as an actress. Most people can't handle such sudden fame well.
I forgot Badlands. Didn't find it a memorable movie, myself, and the box office wasn't enough to influence my impression. You do have a good point though.
