I absolutely loved this movie. I was a teenager when it came out and had also read the book. I'll never forget going to the movie theatre with all my friends to see It and how the whole audience screamed so loud at the very last scene!
I didn't actually see it until they showed it on TV around 1979. They brought it back to the theaters in 1978 or so. I can remember the (black and white) ad in the Movies section which the newspapers used to have. It looked so creepy: A smiling girl wearing a crown and holding a flower bouquet. But it was labeled horror. Weird stuff.
When the showed it on TV it was pretty intense. I can remember some of my friends at school laughing about the shower scene at the beginning, the next day at school.
I've been a horror fan since I was three years old and saw Night of the Living Dead at the drive in. (long story, my parents really weren't normally that irresponsible).
I was way way too young to see Carrie in the movie theatre. But... It was a horror movie. With MY name on it! I *HAD* to see it!
And I did. With my dad. In the theatre, on the big screen. At 10 years old. Loved every second!!!!
Second best memory about that movie - just about a year or so ago, when I let my teen daughter watch it for the first time, and I made sure to be in the room to watch her watch the last three minutes.
The John Travolta character was like the dumbest/jerkiest guy ever (in the novel). Just how I pictured intimidating teenagers in the 70's when I was young. It was almost funny. Stephen King is a genius.
I read this a while ago (before the remake of Carrie) thought some would be interested.
Sissy Spacek got the part because her husband was the set designer and asked De Palma
if she could play the role. Once De Palma saw her, he said that "she looks just like Carrie
should look."

Couldn't rep you again. It's been so long since I read the book, time to go to the library
iirc it was a fast read.
