"As Good As It Gets"

Jack Nicholson, as Melvin, sends a dog down the garbage chute.

Totally un-PC but who cares? It's Jack chewing up the scenery and you know you're in for a ride.

Touche! This one always stands out to me, especially since it was done in one take.

My next fave is the first 10 mins of the Dawn of the Dead remake. I was on the edge of my seat from that point on.

Totally agree!

Also the new "Les Miserables." The shot of the ship along with those first few notes of music was absolutely breathtakingly powerful.

Maybe not the best- but sure left an impression on me since it's the only opening scene I can remember off the top of my head in a heartbeat-
I do not startle easy, but the opening of Man from Snowy River had me jump out of my seat.
Everything is serene and quiet when suddenly a close up of galloping horse hooves in sillouette charge across the screen.
Which makes me think of another opening of another horse movie, Code of Honor.
The scene is not all that wonderful visually, but it sets the premise for the rest of the movie.
During a protest on American soil, the soldiers on horse-back were commanded to take action against the protestors. The character played by Don Johnson refuses to take violent action against his countrymen....he gets in trouble but does basically the same thing again but on a much grander scale. The movie is based on a true event and it will make you mad and break your heart, but is a really good movie.

Apocalypse Now

Helicopters carpet bombing the VC with napalm while Jim Morrison sings "This is the End"
I can remember landing in Saigon on my first day of combat duty, thinking "This is the End" and
knowing for sure I was never going home again, except in a body bag.

There are bunch of movies with great opening scenes that I could list but none had the same impact on me as:

Saving Ryan's Privates

Just kidding....I meant Saving Private Ryan!
